Government

New Orleans City Government

New Orleans, Louisiana

The city is governed by a Mayor-Council structure. A mayor and seven council members make up the governing body. The mayor is elected for a four-year term in a nonpartisan at-large election, while five council members are elected from single-member districts and two at-large members are elected citywide. Members serve four-year staggered terms.

The city council is the legislative body that establishes policy, approves the budget, and oversees city operations. The mayor serves as the city’s chief executive officer, overseeing departments and implementing policies. Unlike a Council-Manager system, New Orleans does not have a city manager; the mayor directly administers city agencies.

The Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office manages legal processes, court security, and corrections. Additionally, the Southeast Louisiana Flood Protection Authority oversees levees and flood protection efforts in the region.
